Maria is originally from South Sudan. She has lived in Australia for over 15 years. Before coming to Australia, she lived in Kenya (Kakuma Refugee Camp) for over 10 years where she and her two brothers got accepted to join their brother in Australia. She speaks Nuer, Swahili and English.
In Australia she studied a Bachelor of Nursing and has also worked as an interpreter for TIS and ONCALL for over 14 years. She is well connected with new arrivals from refugee backgrounds and the refugee health sector. She has been part of the ‘Refugee Health Advisory Group ‘(G11) for the past 11 years.
She is involved as a volunteer in the South Sudanese community and has been involved in multiple presentations to clinicians to help them to support patients from refugee backgrounds. She is passionate about Mental Health
